Oxyfuel cutting is a thermal cutting process that uses oxygen and fuel gas to cut through materials. This process is mostly used in the industrial thermal cutting process because it’s low-cost, it can cut through a wide variety of thicknesses, and it can be used manually or mechanically.

CNC Plasma vs. Oxyfuel Cutting
While both cutting methods work efficiently, they also have their differences. For starters, oxyfuel heats metal to its kindling temperature, where a high-pressure stream of pure oxygen rapidly oxidizes and blows away the metal. CNC plasma heats gas to an extremely high temperature and ionizes it, so it becomes electrically conductive, allowing the electric arc to transfer to the workpiece. CNC plasma can be used on a wider variety of metals, including aluminum. However, oxyfuel is much cheaper, and once it’s set up, there’s virtually no maintenance needed. It’s also able to cut more varieties of thickness, giving you more size options to make up for not being able to cut through aluminum.

Oxyfuel can only cut ferrous materials. This doesn’t include stainless steel or aluminum. It can cut carbon steel, however.

Oxyfuel is like rapid oxidation, because the cut edge is a result of a chemical reaction. The reaction between oxygen and steel creates iron oxide. As steel is oxidized, the oxygen stream helps blow away the material to be cut off.
