WHAT IS A REDUCING FLANGE USED FOR?
Reducing flanges are used to connect pipes of different sizes. They differ primarily by installation method, pressure capacity, and welding requirements. Slip-on (low pressure) slides over the pipe and is fillet-welded, socket weld (high pressure) inserts into a socket and is welded, while threaded connects without welding, typically used for small piping. Weld neck (high pressure) is butt-welded to the pipe for high temperature resistance.
Reducing flanges are available in a wide range of sizes, from 1/2 inch (DN15) to 60 inches (DN1500) or larger for special applications, conforming to standards like ASME B16.5 for smaller sizes 1/2”–24” and ASME B16.47 for larger sizes 26”–60”, Series A or B. They are manufactured to reduce from a larger pipe size to a smaller one, with pressure classes ranging from 150# to 2500#.
Slip-on Reducing Flanges (abbreviated SO) are installed by sliding over the pipe and require fillet welds on both the inside and outside. Although it is the easiest of all three flange types to install, it has the lowest pressure-temperature ratings. With that said, slip-on reducing flanges are generally used for lower pressure, less critical applications.
Socket Weld Reducing Flanges (abbreviated SW) are installed by pipe being inserted into a specially designed, recessed counterbore (socket) and welded on the outside. This style offers superior fatigue strength (often 50% stronger than slip-on) and a smoother internal flow.
Socket weld reducing flanges are the best type of reducing flange for small diameter, high-pressure piping.
Threaded Reducing Flanges feature internal tapered threads that screw onto the pipe, with no welding required. Because of their fast assembly, these reducing flanges are ideal for hazardous areas where welding is dangerous. Threaded reducing flanges cannot be used under high temperature, high pressure or high fatigue conditions. This style of flange is limited to smaller pipe sizes and used for specialized applications, often in small, non-critical pipe systems.
Weld Neck Reducing Flanges feature a long tapered hub that is butt-welded to the pipe, providing superior strength, integrity, high-temperature and high-pressure resistance. The reinforced design prevents stress damage, while the high-strength, welded installation minimizes leaks and failures, making them ideal for critical applications in refineries, power plants, and petrochemical industries.
A companion flange is a pipe flange with a threaded hub on the back that screws directly onto a threaded pipe, while its front face bolts to a mating flange — such as a weld neck, blind, or valve flange — to form a sealed, removable connection. The name reflects its purpose: it only completes a connection when paired with another flange, using bolts and a gasket.

Companion flanges are used where welding is impractical or undesirable:
- Threaded piping systems in temporary, low-to-moderate pressure, or maintenance-sensitive environments
- Connecting valves, pumps, instruments, and mechanical equipment
- Systems requiring frequent inspection, cleaning, or component replacement
Advantages
No welding required, faster installation, easier disassembly, and reduced maintenance downtime.
Limitations
Not ideal for high-pressure systems or environments with significant vibration, where threaded connections may loosen or weld-strength is required.
