WHAT IS A BLEED RING USED FOR?
A bleed ring, also known as a drip ring or test insert, is installed between two standard flanges to provide a safe, controlled way to vent, drain, sample, or monitor fluids in a piping system. Designed with one or more threaded or welded ports, bleed rings allow easy connection of pressure gauges, valves, or instrumentation without permanent piping modifications. Commonly used in high-pressure applications such as oil and gas, power generation, and industrial processing, bleed rings improve safety, simplify maintenance, and help protect systems from over-pressurization and corrosion.
Bleed rings are available in a wide range of nominal pipe sizes (NPS), typically from 1/2 inch to 24 inches, and are designed to fit between ASME B16.5 flanges. They are offered in pressure classes from 150# to 2,500#, with standard ratings including 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 lbs. Standard port sizes for valves and instrumentation are typically 1/2" or 3/4", with threaded (NPT) or socket-weld connection options, raised face (RF) or ring type joint (RTJ) facings, and a typical thickness of 1.5 inches, though custom thicknesses are available. Bleed rings are com- monly used for draining, sampling, and venting in piping systems.
A bleed ring has one or more ports that allow fluids or gases to be vented, drained, sampled, or monitored within a piping system. A spacer is a solid ring with no ports and is used only to maintain flange spacing or alignment. Simply put, bleed rings provide access to the process, while spacers do not.
